Race Awareness Training 

(Short Term) 

Decide on an approach to monitor take-up of the existing online 'tackling race bias at work' module and ensure that staff complete the training.  

Review whether more is needed to supplement or follow-up on this training. 

Higher number of staff and students attending training. Consistent approach to race awareness training across the Division.   

Approach to be agreed and implemented by end of TT22.  

Review to take place through Long Vac 22 to agree next steps.  

This action is being progressed by the cross-cutting Training Working Group plan. The question really is how to encourage staff to engage with the training.  

[Updated Sept 22] New ED&I training programme has been developed for MPLS, including anti-racist allyship and intersectional allyship sessions. 

Black History Month Event 

(Short Term) 

Collaborate with key networks and groups across the division to develop a programme of activity across October. 

Successful programme of events completed by Oct 21. 

To be completed by October 21. 

This will likely be progressed by the proposed ED&I Events Working Group, in collaboration with key networks. 

[Updated Sept 22] Programme of online events, interviews and resources shared online in October 2021, in collaboration with BIPOC STEM Network. Black History Month webpage created.  Plans with BIPOC STEM Network for 22 underway.

BIPOC and BAME Mentorship Scheme

(Medium Term) 

Support the BIPOC STEM Network in the development of their planned mentorship programme.  

Support expansion of programme where needed. For instance: the inclusion of undergraduates, promotion and recruitment for scheme, career/welfare events and training. Also support the remuneration of mentors.     

Successful pilot completed during 2022-23, with a full review to ensure sustainability and longevity. 

Advertising the programme in HT22, with initial conversations happening in TT22.  

Review planned for end of TT22, through Long Vac 22.  

Funding for BIPOC for this term already granted, with plans to work closely with them to develop their ideas further.  

ISSUE: Limited number of BAME mentors could lead to overburden on some of the people we want to help. Potential to include white allies.  

[Updated Sept 22] Pilot programme developed, ready for advertising in HT22 and launch in MT22.  

Race Equality Task Force Consultation recommendations for MPLS 

 

(Medium Term) 

Review the recommendations from the Race Equality Task Force (RETF) consultation and consider what can be implemented within MPLS in advance of wider University work. 

Successful implementation of key recommendations within MPLS departments.  

TBC once RETF timescales have been confirmed. 

Regular updates provided via MPLS ED&I team to MPLS ED&I Steering Group and Fellows. Agreed wider Divisional consultation was required.  

[Updated Sept 22] Consultation recommendations reviewed in MPLS ED&I Town Hall in November 2021. Those actions that can be have already been implemented. ED&I Steering Group have discussed cross-cutting actions and priorities alongside Athena Swan, to review what MPLS can progress.
