Glasstone Research Fellowships in Science were set up to encourage scientists at an early stage of their career to follow their research interests at Oxford.

The prestigious Glasstone Research Fellowships in Science were set up to encourage scientists at an early stage of their career to follow their research interests at Oxford, one of the world’s leading science universities. The fellowships provide an exciting opportunity to conduct an original programme of research and to gain some experience of teaching. The fellowships are supported by a bequest made in 1971 by Professor Samuel Glasstone, and are awarded in memory of Professor Glasstone, a physical chemist, and his first wife, Violette, a Botany graduate and alumna of St Hilda's College. The first Glasstone Fellowships were awarded in 1990 (view the full list of fellows).

Glasstone Fellowships run for three years (subject to satisfactory completion of a probationary period) and include contribution to the costs of conference attendance or fieldwork etc. and a research support grant payable to the host department.

Under the terms of the bequest, Glasstone Research Fellowships can be held at the University of Oxford at the departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Materials, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and in the discipline of Plant Sciences within the department of Biology. The Medical Sciences, and the disciplines of Earth Sciences, Zoology and Biochemistry (unless related to Plant Sciences) are outside the scope of the fellowship scheme. Interdisciplinary research is very welcome, but the main research approach should fall within the scope of the bequest.

Glasstone Fellowships are now allocated in advance to departments via an even distribution model whereby every eligible department receives the same number of fellows, with each department being allocated one of the 8 fellowships that are normally available over a 4 year period on a rota basis.  The allocation order is Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Biology (Plant Sciences), Physics, Mathematical Institute, Materials, and Chemistry.  2023 Fellowships will be awarded in Engineering and Plant Sciences.  Fellowships for October 2024 start dates will be awarded by the Department of Physics, The Mathematical Institute, and the Department of Materials. Departments will advertise the fellowships on the university job portal when available.
