The MPLS Division values the diversity of all of its staff and students, and celebrates diversity in all its forms. We strive to create an inclusive culture where different perspectives and experiences are encouraged, and each person is respected and treated fairly, so that individuals of all backgrounds can fully contribute their talents to our scientific community. Diversity matters and benefits everyone, whether in the classroom, laboratory, or office.

We work closely with the University’s Equality and Diversity Unit, and fully support their commitment to ‘fostering an inclusive culture which promotes equality, values diversity and maintains a working, learning and social environment in which the rights and dignity of all its staff and students are respected.’                 

Beyond celebrating and supporting existing diversity, much remains to be done to actively diversify the pool of talented scientists, engineers and mathematicians to better reflect the general population. Identifying leaks and patching the educational pipeline towards successful STEM careers (in academia or industry) for people from underrepresented groups is an ongoing activity that we are steadfastly committed to. We seek to remedy structural inequalities that prove as barriers for underrepresented groups, along with providing ample support to individuals to achieve their career goals.

Our robust efforts to advance gender equality and support our departments with their Athena SWAN initiatives has resulted in real progress towards attracting, retaining, and promoting women in STEM. All ten academic departments within MPLS have been granted Athena SWAN awards. As of August 2019, three departments hold Silver awards and seven departments hold Bronze awards. Other areas of particular relevance to our equality and diversity work include, but are not limited to:     

  • Schools Liaison and outreach activities aimed at attracting applicants from traditionally underrepresented groups. 
  • Public engagement activities through Oxford Sparks, connecting students, schools and the public to Oxford’s exciting science and research. 
  • Career development and training opportunities (particularly for postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers) to help retain and progress individuals along their educational and career paths. 
  • Connecting students, staff and researchers to entrepreneurship tools and resources through our Enterprise Development Programme, to enrich learning and open doors to different career paths .

Scientific and technological innovations change the world. We want to ensure that all diverse communities have access to the knowledge and education needed to actively participate and contribute to that change. To be successful in our endeavor to transform the STEM landscape, we need to engage everyone in the process.
