Strategic alliances with companies
The University welcomes the opportunity to build strategic alliances or institutes with companies.
These are always bespoke but typically support a capability area, feature a portfolio of projects and have defined funding levels for the medium term (for example five years). This provides support and stability to the research endeavour. UTCs provide an effective environment for companies to be significantly engaged in the planning and execution of leading edge research.
Examples of such arrangements include the following:
- The Department of Engineering Science has long-standing links with Rolls Royce, which supports two University Technology Centres (UTCs) – in Solid Mechanics, and in Heat Transfer and Aerodynamics.
- The Department of Engineering Science also has a UTC with Invensys in Advanced Instrumentation.
- In 2007, Man Group founded the Oxford-Man Institute of Quantitative Finance, which provides an innovative collaboration model, bringing together finance industry practitioners with academics from across the mathematical, computational, and social sciences.
