The Research Excellence Framework (REF) assessed the quality and impact of UK higher education institutions’ research in all disciplines.

The mathematical, physical and life sciences at Oxford received the highest overall grade point average (GPA) and the highest GPA for outputs. We received the highest proportion of 4* outputs, and the highest proportion of 4* activity overall. More than 50 per cent of MPLS activity was assessed as world leading.

The Mathematical Institute, Department of Physics and Department of Earth Sciences received the highest ranking output score within their unit of assessment (UOA).

The Mathematical Institute and Department of Engineering Science received the highest ranking score for the impact of their research.

The results will be used by the UK higher education funding bodies, including HEFCE, to allocate block-grant research funding from 2015-16.
