Following requests from the academic community, the University has commissioned University Bus Ltd (UNO) to operate the Science Transit Shuttle, a frequent and express minibus service connecting the Science Area with Old Road Campus in Headington and Harwell Campus near Didcot. The service will enable academics, research staff, students and visitors to move quickly and conveniently to best make use of these cutting edge scientific and clinical research facilities, helping to spur interaction, investment and commercial innovation between the academic and business communities.

The service will commence on 18 July 2016 and a dedicated website will shortly provide timetables, route maps and real-time information. The service routes and bus stops are available here. Two routes will operate, both originating from the University Club on Mansfield Road:

Route ST1: Science Area to Harwell Campus

  • University Club – South Parks Road bus stop (Hinshelwood Road) – Parks Road bus stop (Department of Materials) – Harwell Campus Bus Station
  • Journey time 40 minutes (off-peak) and 55 minutes (peak)
  • Services run every 30 minutes 7am-7pm weekdays
  • Internal recharge £2.80 one-way
  • On-board Wi-Fi available

Route ST2: Science Area to Old Road Campus

  • University Club – Warneford Hospital (Warneford Lane bus stop) – Old Road Campus (Roosevelt Drive bus stop)

How to use the service

The service will not be open to the public. To travel on the minibus, staff and students will have to complete a one-off online registration and then present their University Identity Card to a ticket machine each time they board. Visitors travelling on University business must be accompanied by a member of staff or in possession of a visitor shuttle pass (available from Departments). Separate arrangements are in place for Science & Technology Facilities Council staff based at Harwell Campus.  Further Information: Shuttle access and recharges information  (7kb)

Future of the service

The service will run for one year as a pilot using funding provided from the Science & Technologies Facilities Council, HIFE and internal contributions. An internal recharge to departments per trip is required to generate the funding necessary to continue the service into the future. Arrangements are being made with individual Departments as to how they want to manage the internal recharge process. If there is insufficient patronage the service will cease after one year.
