Yesterday evening at a ceremony in London doctoral student Katherine Battle received her award.
Katherine is currently a doctoral student in the Zoology Department. She works in the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) as part of the Spatial Ecology and Epidemiology Group. She recently submitted her thesis on The global burden of Plasmodium vivax malaria.
In 2008 Katherine began an MSc degree in Control of Infectious diseases (CID) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She focused her studies on epidemiology, statistical analysis, and vector biology and control. Her dissertation field work was conducted in Kenya to analyse mosquito biting times to determine the efficacy of insecticide treated bed nets as control. She continued her entomology work in western Kenya following the completion of her degree and was awarded the Eldryd Parry Prize for the best overall performance in the MSc CID class at graduation.
Aspects of her work at LSHTM piqued Katherine’s interest in spatial epidemiology and she was given the opportunity to work with Simon Hay, then head of MAP at Oxford. She worked as a research assistant for two years, addressing the role mapping in targeting control of malaria and its vectors, as well as a wide range of other human infectious diseases.
Her doctoral work began in 2012 with the principal aim of mapping the global clinical burden of Plasmodium vivax malaria, funded by the Wellcome Trust. She aims to continue work in assessing the impact of malaria throughout its endemic countries so that feasible elimination strategies may be developed.
The Scopus Young Researcher UK Awards began in 2011, in partnership with the US-UK Fulbright Commission, to recognise talent and raise the profile of young researchers who have made a significant contribution to their area of research. Nominees are assessed by a jury consisting of former Fulbright Scholars and other discipline-specific experts. Their assessment is based on publication and citation information provided by Scopus, Elsevier’s abstract and citation database.
