The British Ecological Society offer grants up to £2,000 to encourage and support their members to promote ecological science to wider audience.

The British Ecological Society (BES) offer outreach grants for outreach projects that:

  • Increase public understanding of, and engagement with, ecology
  • Stimulate discussion about ecology and its implications for society
  • Inspire and enthuse people of all ages about the science of ecology, especially those not previously interested
  • Develop skills in communicating the science of ecology

Your application should fit with at least two of this goals.

Awards are open to individuals and organisations to organise ecological public engagement events. This includes, but is not limited to, BES members, researchers, schools, museums, libraries and community groups.

Your application should be aimed at a non-academic audience (define your audience as tightly as you can) and demonstrate that you understand this audience's needs, that it's relevant for them, and how you will directly interact with this audience.

Projects aimed solely at supporting curriculum based science for school children aren't eligible but if school-aged children are the most relevant audience for you, you should have a think about other ways of reaching that audience (e.g., clubs, youth groups, interest/hobby groups, and other channels).

You will need to have a clear plan for how you will evaluate/asses the effectiveness and impact of your project as part of your application.

Grants are available up to £2,000, and can be used in addition to other sources of funding you have secured.

There is also £1,000 for regionally-focussed projects, you can find out more about that funding here.
