The Natural Environment Research Council is offering £3,000 to £10,000 to support projects that explore, and trial approaches for engaging the public with environmental science.

NERC has announced that the Growing Roots funding opportunity is now live.

Apply for funding to explore, and trial approaches for engaging the public with environmental science.

Applications from a range of backgrounds are welcome, including, community groups, researchers (environmental science, non-environmental science, early career), PhD students, public engagement professionals, charities, public representative/public-facing groups, government bodies, and businesses.

All applications must include a researcher who is eligible for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding and working within NERC remit.

NERC values diversity and inclusion across all its funding programmes, and actively encourages applications from diverse groups of people.

Projects can range between £3,000 and £10,000 and will run from 29 May 2023 until 26 February 2024.

Projects should address at least one of the scheme's objectives:

  • Trialling a novel approach
  • Bringing people together
  • Learning by doing
  • Responding to new opportunities

If you're interested in applying, it's well worth reading this short brief from NERC's public engagement programme manager for some good insights into what they're looking for. It includes that simply building relationships and exploring ideas with partners is an eligible activity, and that stating 'the general public' as your audience is not helpful and does not align with their criteria for quality.
