The Oxford Sparks Advisory Board is looking for two Early Career Researchers (ECRs) to join its team. If you are a DPhil student or post-doctoral researcher enthusiastic about public engagement with research, APPLY NOW!

Who are we?

Oxford Sparks is the University of Oxford’s digital science communication platform. We work with University researchers across departments to create exciting and dynamic original content, which we share on our website and YouTube channel, and across our social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter). You can also check out our podcast series here.

The Oxford Sparks Advisory Board brings together academics and professional services staff from across the University (including the Public Affairs Directorate (PAD) and the Gardens, Libraries and Museums (GLAM) team). The group provides support, feedback and advice to the Oxford Sparks team, particularly regarding existing or future content ideas, but also the wider activities of the Oxford Sparks programme (including training initiatives). Board meetings (currently online) are held once a term, on Wednesday of 6th Week where possible. 

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for two Early Career Researchers (ECRs (DPhil students or post-doctoral researchers)) – one from the MPLS Division and one from the Medical Sciences Division – to join the board for a period of 12 months. If you are unsure of your status as an ECR/your eligibility, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Candidates must have an enthusiasm for public engagement with research (ideally with a particular interest in digital content) and be able to provide insight from their experience as an Early Career Researcher.

 

They should also contribute to the following Board objectives:

  • Be a critical friend for the programme
  • Be an advocate for the programme
  • Advise on activities and content
  • Suggest upcoming areas of scientific interest which should be targeted

 

If possible, they could also contribute to these Board objectives:

  • Provide contacts and support where possible, particularly for academic support and fundraising
  • Provide advice on good practice
  • Ensure a broad and diverse range of research is reflected
  • Ensure that the programme can link up with other activities across the University, where relevant

 

Together, group members will have experience in public engagement, teaching, strategic communications and/or media communications across a broad area of sciences. 

 

In return for just six hours of your time (3x two-hour Board meetings across the year), you’ll have the chance to work with a diverse group of experienced academics and support staff across the University, all of whom are passionate about public engagement with research. You’ll have the chance to directly influence the activities of the University’s main science communication channel, including the creation of new content and the design of new training programmes.
