Course Details

This course is for non-native speakers of English and provides the opportunity to develop the communication skills needed for teaching and for wider academic practice. The focus will be on speaking and writing clearly in English, and on being able to make use of appropriate styles for a range of contexts. Participants will be expected to give a short presentation on a subject connected with their field, and submit written assignments for peer and tutor feedback during the term. Classes will be 2 hours per week for 8 weeks. Participants will be required to attend all classes and to complete some tasks outside class time.

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Understand and use a range of vocabulary to support teaching and academic practice
  • Give a presentation on their research topic
  • Give feedback on the work of others in the class
  • Produce a written argument on their research topic
  • Access a range of resources to support their language development

Intended For

Graduate research students and postdoctoral researchers. Applicants will be required to undertake a pre-course assessment.

Write one A4 page (between 400 – 500 words) on the following topic: My experience of English academia and my expectations of an Academic English course. Please include your experience of giving presentations or attending conferences in English, and discuss any English publications you have written. If you are new to academia, focus on what you would like to achieve.
