Preparing for Learning and Teaching at Oxford (PLTO) - Tutors and Class Assistants
If you're intending to look for/ start work as a lab demonstrator, tutor or class assistant, then you may wish attend a workshop in the Oxford Preparing for Learning and Teaching programme.
If you're intending to look for/start work as a tutor or class assistant in the next term or so, and/or you want to find out more about tutorial/class teaching before you start, then this introductory workshop may be for you.Tutorials form the heart of students’ experiences of learning at Oxford, particularly in the first two years in science. Tutorials in science and engineering are intended to help students develop their problem-solving skills, analytical/critical thinking, ability to use evidence and logic in constructing a hypothesis, and better understand scientific method, as well as achieve a deep understanding of the material they’re learning. In this interactive workshop, you will:
- learn about tutorials in the Oxford science/engineering context;
- think about the purposes of tutorials; and
- start to think about ways to make your teaching as effective and enjoyable as possible.
Graduate research students and postdoctoral researchers
Please note that these workshops count as MPLS’s PLTO training if your department does not offer its own version of the PLTO. You should check what training your department requires you to complete before you take on a teaching role.
