Professor Aidong Yang, Lead for Capacity Building and Training for AGILE, invites your researchers to take part in these interactive and popular sessions. The sessions are designed for learning-by-doing practical skills development, building on feedback from previous sessions delivered under the NERC Discipline Hopping award hosted by the Oxford Martin School, and through the ESRC IAA hosted by Social Sciences Division. Previous attendance at earlier sessions is not a prerequisite for participating in these new sessions.

Crossing Boundaries (Monday 19th September, 09.30-12.30, Seminar Rooms 1&2, OMS) is an interactive and dynamic half-day workshop designed to develop effective communication with researchers across different disciplines, and understand multi and inter-disciplinary collaboration. • To enable participants to focus on the core message of their research, and why it matters
  • To enable participants to think about the audience and what they need/want to know
  • To receive and understand other peoples’ research
  • To break-down the barriers to enable successful collaboration

Engaging with Policy Makers (Monday 19th September, 13.30-17.00, Seminar Rooms 1&2, OMS) is a dynamic and highly interactive half-day workshop designed to plan a strategy for engaging with policy makers, understand what they want from academics, and what other influences come into play in how your research is received. This includes a practical session on engaging with policy and parliamentarians to put learning into practice. It is designed for researchers across the divisions at post-doctoral level or equivalent, in the broad remit of environmental sciences and collaborating disciplines, eligible to apply for external funding.

Objectives of the session:

  • To enable participants to identify with whom they should engage and who else influences in their research area
  • To understand how to communicate effectively with these audiences, and when
  • To identify who is friend or foe to their research and how to win them over
  • To reflect on good and poor practice
  • To develop an effective engagement strategy

Participants should have an understanding of current policy issues and applications for their research in these areas.
