Since 2021, MPLS has been running a programme of activities for Mental Health Awareness Week, which annually falls in May. Activity for 2023 will be updated shortly. In the meantime, see the programme of activities that took place last May 2022 as a taster.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2023

The theme for the week this year is loneliness, so along with workshops, talks and training sessions discussing mental health and wellbeing strategies, we hope to facilitate opportunities for staff and students to meet colleagues, friends and peers throughout the week. We are delivering a combination of online and in-person activities.

Details on what is on offer throughout the week can be seen below, with more sessions being added shortly.

If you have any queries or comments, please contact us via diversity@mpls.ox.ac.uk

TALK/WORKSHOP: Navigating social anxiety and the impact of social distancing as we re-enter the workplace

Join Rebecca Reed from Siendo at a wellbeing session tailored to the needs of the University of Oxford to provide attendees with the knowledge, tools and confidence to support themselves and their colleagues in their return back to the workplace.

The talk will be structured around the MHAW theme of loneliness, with topical links to the current COVID situation. With the change of restrictions and the movement back into the workplace, this talk will look at the social anxiety that so many people are currently experiencing around this shift.

Social skills are like any other skill. If they're not used frequently, they atrophy. We have all spent the last two years avoiding other humans; we have been told that socialising is to be avoided and other people have become a threat. This has a huge impact on how we connect with those around us and the quality of our social skills going forward.

Therefore, for this talk, we will explore the general levels of anxiety people are feeling about socialising and being around others again and we will focus on how to recalibrate your social skills after the experience of the last two years in order to reduce loneliness and social anxiety and effectively re-engage in the workplace.
