The UK Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowships, managed by the Royal Academy of Engineering on behalf of the Government Office for Science, connect leading academic researchers with the intelligence sector. Recipients get financial backing for a minimum two-year period, along with mentorship from a Fellow of the Academy as well as an advisor from the intelligence community.

Dr Christian Schroeder de Witt's research addresses the growing challenge of artificial intelligence in media manipulation. His work focuses on developing techniques to spot AI-created content and uncover any concealed information within it. The project aims to strengthen defences against deceptive media and protect against hidden communications.

Maritime security is the focus of Dr Simon Birnbach's fellowship. His research combines multiple data streams - from satellite images to vessel location reports and wireless signals - to enhance monitoring of maritime activities. This integrated approach seeks to improve detection of suspicious behaviour at sea.

Each fellowship provides up to £250,000 in research funding over two years, supporting work that contributes to intelligence, security and defence priorities while remaining in the public domain.
