Oxford University is the UK's largest and most diverse centre for quantum research, with over 200 researchers.

Quantum science and technologies

Much of our work is aimed towards quantum technology: harnessing quantum effects in a new generation of devices that will outperform existing machines, with potential for revolutionary impact on real-world challenges, from the discovery of novel drugs and new materials through to machine learning, information security and even carbon reduction through optimised resource usage. In particular Oxford is at the forefront of the UK’s efforts to build the first generation of quantum computers with world-leading performance. The UKRI EPSRC Hub in Quantum Computing and Simulation is hosted at Oxford and the UK’s Quantum Computing Centre is expected to be announced at Harwell in the near future. With a focus on practical approaches and applications of quantum technologies, quantum technology spinouts are emerging, making Oxfordshire the nascent UK centre for quantum research and development.
