The MPLS DPhil Bootcamp is a one-day workshop that helps new doctoral students build essential skills for managing their research, time, and relationships. Through practical sessions and expert insights, participants learn strategies for resilience, productivity, and making the most of Oxford’s opportunities.

COURSE DETAILS

The DPhil Bootcamp is an interactive, full-day workshop designed to support new doctoral students in the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Division as they begin their research journey at Oxford.

This bootcamp provides practical strategies, resources, and insights to help students navigate the academic, personal, and professional challenges of a DPhil.

Through expert panels, hands-on activities, and peer discussions, participants will gain tools for effective time and project management, build resilience in the face of uncertainty, and learn how to foster productive relationships with supervisors and the wider Oxford community.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this bootcamp, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the DPhil process - Identify key milestones, expectations, and available resources throughout the doctoral journey.
  • Apply effective self-management strategies - Develop time management techniques and habits to maintain productivity and avoid burnout.
  • Implement project management principles - Use planning tools and contingency strategies to track progress and adapt to changes.
  • Build strong supervisory relationships - Communicate needs and expectations clearly and understand the supervisor’s perspective.
  • Leverage Oxford’s opportunities - Access networking, training, and career development resources to enhance academic and professional growth.
  • Develop resilience and adaptability - Manage uncertainty, cope with research setbacks, and cultivate a growth mindset for long-term success.
  • Create a personal action plan - Reflect on learning and set goals for continued development throughout the DPhil.
