UKRI policy internships allow UKRI-funded doctoral students to undertake a three-month placement a policy organisation.
The UKRI Policy Internships scheme provides an opportunity for UKRI-funded doctoral students to undertake a three-month placement at one of a selected group of influential policy organisations.
Currently the scheme supports on average 125 internships per year across all host partners, which include government departments, learned societies, parliamentary services and NGOs.
During their internship, the student undertakes training and experience on a policy topic agreed with their host partner that is relevant to both parties.
At the end of the internship, the student is expected to have:
- produced a briefing paper;
- participated in a policy inquiry;
- and, or organised a policy event.
The intention of the scheme is to embed students in an environment where they can engage with the process of converting research outputs into policy.
These internships equip students with transferable skills and training relevant to the future career paths that the student may choose.
All internships must start before the end of a student’s funded period of study.
Internships are financially supported by the Research Councils and host partners. Stipend payments should continue during the period of the internship. The funding details will depend on the applicant’s Research Council and which host partner is chosen so you should carefully check the funding guidance.
The deadline for applications is 4pm UK Time, 2 October.

Read: What having conversations with voters taught me about science communication

"Even during a bitter election season, persuasive conversations were not only possible, but surprisingly attainable". It might feel like it's utterly impossible to have productive conversations about science sometimes but this article featured in Scientific American gives a really interesting perspective and reflections on effective strategies for having potentially sticky conversations. Get yourself a cuppa and give it a read; especially if your research is in climate change or any other 'controversial' area.
