To build participants’ confidence and skills in presenting themselves and their work in different situations and to difference audiences.
COURSE DETAILS
Presenting one’s work to a variety of audiences is a crucial part of successful research.
This masterclass will cover different aspects of personal impact and how to communicate your research effectively. It will include sessions on how to hone your content for different audiences – from specialists to the general public.
The workshop will allow you to improve your presentation style, including sessions on body language and voice.
The day will include practical exercises (some of which will be filmed) to allow for self-reflection and feedback.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the session participants will be able to:
- Select and design message content effectively and adapt it for different audiences.
- Understand the importance and impact of body language, and practice adapting their own body language to enhance communication.
- Consider the effect and impact of other factors, including language, voice and pace, and how these can enhance communication.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of their communication, and identify aspects for improvement.

This course has been designed for Associate Professor Tutorial and Non-Tutorial Fellows, Research Fellows, Senior Postdocs and other early career academics. Those eligible to take part will be invited to apply.

COURSE LEADER
Jennie Walmsley is an executive coach for senior professionals, focusing on personal and professional growth, especially for women in public life. She promotes strategic thinking in leadership and management, helping clients build confidence and gain perspective.
As a broadcast journalist, Jennie has worked with all major BBC channels, excelling in investigative journalism and documentaries. Her notable projects include visiting Auschwitz with survivors and documenting gun gangs in Chicago.
In addition, Jennie is a media and presentation trainer, crafting custom courses to prepare clients for broadcasting and presentations. She provides comprehensive training on messaging, scripting, and crisis management.
Jennie also engages in copywriting for various organisations and regularly chairs public events, fostering balanced discussions among stakeholders.
