Leadership in Action (in-person)
All Career development Confidence Leadership Research staff Teamwork
Wednesday, 19 June 2024 to Friday, 21 June 2024, 9am - 5pm
An in-person leadership programme for research staff. Leadership in Action is a 3-day participative leadership course that provides the opportunity to explore and develop your own leadership style. You will also be able to meet, work, and network with others. The course culminates in a celebratory dinner on the final evening.
Leadership in Action explores what leadership is and looks at some leadership theory. More importantly though it provides researchers with the opportunity to identify and develop their own leadership style through leading and participating in activities. It is a fast-paced face to face course that takes a ‘learning by doing’ approach – so while there are presentations on theory, most of the time is spent actively taking part in activities and then reflecting on them.
The course will culminate in a celebratory dinner on the evening of the last day (Friday 21st June) where we will be joined by previous participants, and senior members of divisional staff.
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Consider what leadership is and means
- Identify a range of leadership styles and approaches, and how they impact others
- Identify your own preferred leadership approach by participating in, leading and reflecting on group activities
- Practise leading in different situations
- Start to develop new leadership approaches
- Identify how you can use leadership skills in your current role and beyond
‘Interactive and activity-based course, very supportive and engaging atmosphere’
‘I learnt a lot more from failing, being in a safe space where you can mess up’
'I have changed my perspective about what a good leader looks like. This has been life-changing for me in terms of building confidence and making the most of leadership opportunities afterwards. The time commitment is worth it.'
' A confidence-boosting course which facilitates the development of practical leadership skills'
‘Probably the single most useful academic leadership seminar I have been to. It is a rather significant time commitment but it did pay off in my case. I would strongly encourage … ECRs to sign up’
'A safe space for young academics to practice being leaders'
'This course has given me practical skills and tools which have fundamentally changed how I interact with my students, mentees and colleagues. I think every ECR would benefit from it.'
