An in-person leadership programme for research staff. Leadership in Action is a 3-day participative leadership course giving you the opportunity to meet, work, and network with others. The course culminates in a celebratory dinner on the final evening.

 Course Details

Leadership in Action provides the opportunity for you to explore what leadership is, look at some leadership theory, and identify and develop your own leadership style. You will also be able to meet and work with people from other departments and divisions. The course takes a very practical and experiential approach; this means there will be presentations on leadership theory, but for the most part you will actively participate in sessions and activities.

This year the course will end with a celebratory dinner on the evening of the last day.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • develop an understanding of what leadership is
  • understand how leaders impact others
  • develop your own individual leadership style by both participating in and leading group activities
  • benefit from reflection, feedback and peer-coaching activities
  • identify how to apply leadership skills and style in your current role and beyond

Testimonials

‘Interactive and activity-based course, very polite and engaging atmosphere’

‘I learnt a lot more from failing, being in a safe space where you can mess up’

‘I learnt a lot about my own leadership style, and have been able to implement many of the things I learnt to improve my leadership skills since completing the course. As an early career researcher, it was particularly useful to start thinking about how to be an effective leader as I take on new day-to-day supervision & mentoring roles.’

‘probably the single most useful academic leadership seminar I have been to. It is a rather significant time commitment but it did pay off in my case. I would strongly encourage … ECRs to sign up’

‘Learn new tools…. the opportunity to put them into practice, and receive feedback about them, e.g., lead in a meeting, deal with difficult situations in a team, mentoring, different styles of leadership’
