The aim of the course is to enable researchers to adopt a responsible approach when considering the positive and negative aspects of their research, including the moral, ethical and societal impacts of it.

The course is a follow up to the online Research Integrity course developed by Research Services, which is a pre-requisite for this face to face course.

COURSE DETAILS

Modern research, even that not involving humans or animals directly, can potentially be used in a wide variety of both positive and negative ways. It is the researcher’s responsibility to think about, and plan for the potential impact of their work, and how their work can be carried out in an appropriately ethical and responsible manner. In this course we will discuss a variety of case studies to understand responsible research and innovation principles and practice, and plan our research according to ethical and professional standards, avoiding and mitigating the risks of negative impacts.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Appreciate the importance of RRI and its application in the course of their research.
  • Consider and discuss a selection of case studies in the context of responsible research and innovation.
  • Develop an operational understanding of RRI principles and values and consider how these can and should be applied to their own work.
  • Consider and discuss how RRI should be applied to using human research participants, including those who might be vulnerable.
  • Consider and discuss strategies to manage conflicts caused by unethical practice elsewhere.
  • Have the opportunity to bring and discuss real situations in their own work.
  • Utilise a selection of tools designed to aid critical thinking about RRI.
