Innovation rarely happens in isolation—and increasingly, the most transformative ideas emerge when researchers step beyond their disciplinary boundaries. This GROW session explores the art and practice of multi‑disciplinary collaboration, offering practical insights into how researchers can build meaningful networks, form effective partnerships, and turn ideas into real‑world impact.

Event DETAILS

Join us for a lively and informative panel discussion featuring researchers who have successfully secured EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) funding. Through their case studies, they will share:

  • How they identified collaborators across departments and disciplines
  • What made their interdisciplinary partnerships work
  • Strategies for navigating challenges, from communication barriers to differing research cultures
  • The role of the EPSRC IAA in enabling experimentation, prototyping, and industry engagement
  • Tips for researchers looking to broaden their networks and develop collaborative, impact‑focused proposals

Whether you’re starting to explore interdisciplinary work, seeking collaborators for a new idea, or preparing to apply for IAA or similar translational funding, this session will offer concrete advice and inspiration. You’ll also have the chance to connect with colleagues from across the University who are interested in innovation, knowledge exchange, and cross‑disciplinary research.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this GROW session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and understand what makes cross‑disciplinary partnerships successful.
  • Apply practical strategies for building and sustaining interdisciplinary networks, both within and beyond their department.
  • Recognise how EPSRC IAA funding can support collaborative, impact‑focused research, including early‑stage prototyping and engagement with external partners.
  • Analyse real case studies to extract lessons on overcoming common challenges—such as communication gaps, differing methods, or mismatched expectations—when working across disciplines.

Intended for

Researchers, doctoral students, professional services staff, and anyone interested in collaboration, research impact, and innovation pathways.

Format

Panel discussion, case study highlights, and audience Q&A, followed by informal networking.
