Beginners Statistics with R (in-person)

This course will provide an introduction to basic statistical concepts, methods and tools for scientific research.

COURSE DETAILS

The course consists of a weekly three hour class, 09.30 - 12.30, beginning 23rd April 2024 and then every Tuesday until 11th June 2024.

This course will provide an introduction to statistical inference and basic commands using R.

Topics covered include: hypothesis testing, basic statistical testing procedures, linear regression, base R, and introduction to the tidyverse suite of R packages.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course participants will:

  • Become more familiar and comfortable with basic statistics and probability concepts.
  • Learn how to conduct rudimentary statistical tests.
  • Understand the different types of data and their connection to the available hypothesis testing techniques.
  • Start to become familiar with interpretation and reporting of statistical outputs.
  • Be comfortable with base R and able to load libraries, perform simple data wrangling tasks, and plot simple graphics.
  • Be able to perform data wrangling tasks using modern R functionalities.

INTENDED FOR

DPhil students and research staff with little prior knowledge of statistical tools and approaches, and who need them for their research
