Bernard Taylor CVO CBE DL, Deputy Steward of the University of Oxford, has received an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of his significant experience and leadership in international business and corporate finance for the engineering and science industries.
A Fellow of both St John's College and New College, and a member of the Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences Divisional Board, Bernard Taylor was among 74 leading figures elected to the Academy's Fellowship last month. The honour recognises excellence in engineering and technology sectors.
Currently Chair of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, he is a scientist specialising in organic chemistry who has built a career spanning more than 45 years in international business and corporate finance. His experience includes senior roles at Smiths Industries, Baring Brothers, Robert Fleming, and JP Morgan Chase, before founding Evercore Partners International in Europe in 2006. He served as its Chair until his retirement in December 2019, when he became Chair Emeritus.
He is currently Chair of the Advisory Board of the Royal Society and a director and founder of Oxford Science Enterprises plc.
At Oxford, Bernard Taylor serves on major committees including the Medical Sciences Divisional Board and the MPLS Divisional Board. He has been a Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire since 2011 and was Chair of the Royal Commission for the Great Exhibition of 1851 from 2011 until 2022, having previously served as Finance Commissioner for eight years.
Three Oxford academics from the MPLS Division were also elected as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering: Emeritus Professor Ronald Roy and Professor Andrea Vedaldi from the Department of Engineering Science, and Professor Michael Wooldridge from the Department of Computer Science.
The new Fellows will be formally admitted to the Academy at a ceremony in London on 18 November.
