Professor Christl Donnelly and Professor Alain Goriely have been awarded Visiting Miller Professorships at the University of California, Berkeley, in early 2026.

Christl Donnelly and Alain Goriely

The Mathematical, Physical, and Life Sciences (MPLS) Division is pleased to announce that two of its academics, Professor Christl Donnelly (Department of Statistics) and Professor Alain Goriely (Mathematical Institute), have been awarded Visiting Miller Professorships at the University of California, Berkeley from January to May 2026.

The Miller Institute programme recognises eminent scientists and brings them to Berkeley for short-term collaborative research within the Institute’s interdisciplinary community.

Professor Donnelly will collaborate with several leading academics at Berkeley, including Professor Mike Boots (Department of Integrative Biology), Professor Nicholas Jewell (UC Berkeley School Public Health), Professor George Roderick (UC Berkeley Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management), Professor John Marshall (UC Berkeley School of Public Health), and Professor Joseph Lewnard (UC Berkeley School of Public Health). Meanwhile, Professor Goriely’s work will focus on exploring interdisciplinary research opportunities with Berkeley’s mathematical and scientific community.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Professor Donnelly said: 'I am honoured to have been offered this Visiting Miller Professorship. The chance to work alongside such an outstanding group of interdisciplinary researchers at Berkeley is truly exciting. I look forward to the many collaborative opportunities this appointment will bring.'

Professor Goriely added: 'It’s a privilege to join the Miller Institute and to collaborate with Berkeley’s exceptional researchers. This opportunity will allow me to contribute to and learn from the interdisciplinary exchanges that the Institute so strongly encourages.'

The Miller Institute Visiting Professorship programme emphasises in-residence participation, ensuring that appointees actively engage with the Berkeley academic community through research interactions and public talks or colloquia. This residency requirement encourages rich exchanges of ideas within the Miller Institute’s vibrant intellectual environment.

The MPLS Division warmly congratulates Professors Donnelly and Goriely. Their appointments highlight the global impact and excellence of research within the Division. We look forward to seeing the outcomes of their collaborations at Berkeley and the contributions they will make to advancing interdisciplinary science.
