Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD Fellowship
The Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD Fellowship Programme seeks to recognize the contributions of emerging leaders in Computer Science and Engineering at graduate level. The PhD Fellowship in AI/ML was created as part of the Apple Scholars programme to support the work of outstanding PhD students from around the world, who are pursuing cutting edge research in machine learning and artificial intelligence. The programme is targeted towards mid-to-late career PhD students with an established research and publication record.
Oxford has been invited to nominate outstanding candidates for this award, which is comprised of a monetary gift and professional mentorship.
What is included?
- Monetary gift for two academic years to help with living and other related expenses
- $5,000 USD gift each year to support research-related travel and associated expenses
- Mentorship with an Apple researcher
General Eligibility Requirements
To be considered, students must meet all of the following criteria:
- Be enrolled full time in their DPhil programme for the duration of the 2027/28 academic year;
- Be in the first or second year of their DPhil programme in the 2025/26 academic year;
First year students who are applying for the Apple Fellowship will need to demonstrate exceptional achievement during the first year of their DPhil. This should be evidenced through validation external to their research group, demonstrating their ability and potential to achieve beyond what would normally be expected of a DPhil student in their field. Examples include publications or recognition from a prestigious organisation or event, such as a poster prize at an internationally recognised conference. - Not hold another industry-sponsored full fellowship while they are an Apple Scholar in AI/ML.

How to apply:
Applications will be reviewed by an Oxford academic panel, and selected students will be nominated. If nominated, the MPLS Divisional Office will submit your application on your behalf during the Apple application window. Direct applications from students will not be accepted.
To apply, please submit an application to the MPLS Divisional Office via this MS form by 9am (BST) on Friday 31st July 2026. The following materials should be submitted as part of your application:
- Your CV and publication list
- Research Abstract (200 words maximum)
- Research statement covering past work and proposed direction for next 2 years (4 page maximum, including citations, in a legible font size) clearly stating the hypothesis and expected contributions to the chosen research area.
Personally identifiable information is redacted for phase one reviewers. We recommend not including personally identifiable information in the main body of research statement in order to maintain research statement clarity for reviewers of the redacted copy. - 2 letters of recommendation from those familiar with your work (at least one from your supervisor - 1 page maximum per letter).
- Link to most recent published work (optional)
The University will nominate up to three eligible candidates. Each nomination will be for a unique research area.
Nominating universities will hear back regarding the status of their nominations by December 2026.

Google PhD Fellowship Program
The Google PhD Fellowship Program seeks to recognize outstanding graduate students doing exceptional and innovative research in areas relevant to computer science and related fields. Fellowships support promising PhD candidates of all backgrounds who seek to influence the future of technology. Oxford has been invited to nominate up to three exceptional PhD candidates for this award.
What is included?
- Up to 2-year Fellowship
- Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment.
General Eligibility Requirements
- Students enrolled at any stage of their PhD are eligible to apply.
- Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
- Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
- Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non profit organization funding is exempt.
- Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.

- Short (1-page) CV of your primary PhD supervisor
- 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with your work (at least one from the thesis supervisor for current PhD students)
- Research/dissertation proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
- Transcripts of current and previous academic records
