Developing Learning and Teaching is the second level of training in teaching skills at Oxford

COURSE DETAILS

If you are a postdoctoral researcher or DPhil student teaching in MPLS, this course offers an opportunity for you to find ways to make your teaching more effective, learn how to take a more evidence-based approach to your teaching and your students' learning, and gain a portable qualification that will enhance your employability in academia. 

The Developing Learning and Teaching (DLT) programme for MPLS is led by the Centre for Teaching and Learning and comprises three interactive workshops. As part of the programme, participants will be required to engage in additional, related activities; for example, reading some educational literature, teaching evaluation and session design.The DLT Programme is assessed via a written reflective teaching portfolio (2,500-5,000 words); support for writing the portfolio is provided by the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

The DLT Programme is accredited by the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) and successful completion and portfolio assessment leads to a SEDA PDF Supporting Learning Award. This is an award recognised throughout the UK, mapped at Descriptor 1 to the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Consider how teaching affects students’ learning
  • Choose inclusive teaching strategies to design lectures, classes, tutorials or lab practicals
  • Describe your teaching philosophy
  • Evaluate your teaching using feedback or observation
  • Use educational literature to discuss your teaching practices.
  • Write a teaching portfolio demonstrating that these objectives have been achieved

INTENDED FOR

DPhil students and Research Staff engaged in teaching who would like to learn more about  learning and teaching in the sciences. 

To participate in the programme you need to:

  • Have completed a PLTO course or equivalent
  • Be teaching in 2 categories in Checklist A or 1 Category in Checklist B in the interval after you begin the DLT programme and before you submit your portfolio (up to 3 terms after you start DLT)
  • Be teaching registered Oxford University students
